How to Prepare a Slope Mower for the Mowing Season

A practical pre-season checklist for tracked RC slope mowers

The first cut of the season is not the place to discover a stretched track, a gummed-up carburetor, or a remote that pairs intermittently. Slope mowers earn their keep on ground that punishes ordinary ride-ons, and that same ground will expose any shortcut taken in the garage. In our experience, a disciplined pre-season routine—performed once, before the first climb—can turn a costly in-season breakdown into a half-day of preventive work.

This guide is written for owners and operators of commercial-grade remote-controlled tracked slope mowers, the class of machine commonly specified for highway embankments, drainage levees, solar-field graded banks, and other slopes where a walk-behind or ride-on would be unsafe. The procedures are intentionally practical: open the engine, inspect the tracks, exercise the remote, and document the result. None of these checks requires specialist equipment beyond what a competent small-engine shop normally has.

Read the whole guide once before starting. Some steps build on earlier ones—track tension, for example, is meaningful only after the machine is on a clean, level surface and packed debris has been removed. Take the time to gather oil, filters, grease, a torque wrench, and a ruler or deflection gauge before rolling the machine out of storage. The goal is not to rush through a checklist, but to make the first climb of the year as uneventful as the last one of the previous season.

1. Oil, Fuel, and the Quiet Killers

Start where many engine problems begin: the fluids. Change the engine oil even if the hour meter still shows remaining service life; fuel treated with stabilizer and left in the tank since last October can still cause problems. Drain the old gasoline, replace the fuel filter, and inspect the fuel lines for hardening, cracks, or seepage around the clamps. A 13 hp commercial-grade engine—the class used by several established tracked slope mowers—will not forgive stale fuel or a restricted main jet once it is working under load on a 30-degree face.

Check the air filter against the manufacturer's scheduled service interval and replace it if it still carries last season's dust. A restricted intake on a slope run can affect the mixture, foul the spark plug, and contribute to an engine stall precisely where a stall is most difficult to manage—mid-climb, with the blade still engaged. Finish the engine-side inspection by checking the spark plug, confirming the plug gap, and taking a fresh look at the kill-switch wiring.

2. Blade and Deck: The Part That Actually Earns the Money

Remove the deck guard or access panel and inspect the flail blades or swing blades for wear, cracks around the mounting eyes, and loss of cutting edge. A blade that has reached its wear limit will cut poorly and can contribute to spindle imbalance; replace blades in matched sets rather than mixing heavily worn and new blades. Confirm the blade-bolt torque against the service manual. Commercial slope decks typically specify a substantial torque value, and a loose blade can quickly lead to damage around the spindle housing.

While the deck is open, clear packed grass from around the discharge area and blade path, then inspect the deck shell for cracks near welded brackets. A small crack in this area can develop into a major deck failure once the machine is working across uneven ground on a 35-degree bank. Grease every zerk specified in the lubrication chart; a slope mower's pivots experience considerably more load than those on a typical lawn tractor, and dry pivot points can develop excessive play surprisingly quickly.

Pay particular attention to the blade-spindle bearings. On a slope machine, these bearings can operate at an angle for extended periods, so any roughness or play felt when turning the spindle by hand deserves attention. Depending on the manufacturer's maintenance procedure, regreasing or replacement may be required. A spindle failure during mowing is more than an inconvenience: it can jam the blade, overload the engine, and leave the operator with a machine that has to be recovered from a difficult slope by other means.

3. Remote Control, Kill Switch, and Safety Systems

The remote is the operator's only direct connection to the machine when it is working on dangerous ground, so treat it as a safety device rather than a convenience. Replace the remote batteries even if they still show voltage; a transmitter with a weak battery can lose communication at the worst possible moment. Pair-test the remote through its full working range, verify that the emergency-stop button on the transmitter stops the engine within the expected response time, and confirm that the tether or kill-cord system, if equipped, actually shuts the machine down when pulled.

Walk around the machine and test every safety interlock listed in the manual, including tilt sensors, operator-presence substitutes, and any slope cut-out feature. These systems are designed to stop the machine when an abnormal operating condition occurs. Log the test date and result; for municipalities and commercial contractors, keeping this information as part of pre-use documentation also makes operator handovers and maintenance records easier to manage.

For commercial operators, this is also a good point to check whether the remote-control system behaves consistently after storage. During production and final inspection, our engineers pay close attention to signal response and emergency-stop behavior because a remote system that works correctly on flat concrete must still respond predictably when the machine is operating at a distance on a slope.

4. Tracks: The Slope Lifeline

On a tracked slope mower , the track is one of the most important safety components. Inspect the track pads for torn lugs, missing bolts, and uneven wear across the width. A track that has lost pads on one side can climb poorly and may slew sideways on a cross-slope—exactly the behavior a slope machine is designed to prevent. Check track tension against the manufacturer's specified sag or deflection value; excessive tension accelerates roller and idler wear, while insufficient tension can allow the track to jump the sprocket under load.

Measure tension with the machine on a hard, level surface and with the tracks clean. Where the manual specifies a deflection range—commonly a small number of millimeters at the midpoint between rollers—keep the measurement within that range. Also inspect the drive-sprocket teeth for hooked or rounded profiles. A worn sprocket reduces track life and can contribute to sudden track slip on a grade.

Replace tracks as a pair when wear is uneven. Mismatched tracks on a slope are not simply a maintenance issue; differences in grip and track condition can affect steering and stability when the machine is working across uneven terrain.

5. Slope Rating: Match the Machine to the Bank

No amount of preparation makes a machine rated for gentle slopes appropriate for a 40-degree embankment. Before the season's first climb, verify the model's published maximum slope rating and compare it with the steepest ground you actually mow. Established commercial tracked slope mowers are commonly rated in the 45- to 55-degree range; wheeled consumer machines and conventional ride-ons are designed for much less demanding terrain and should never be pushed beyond their intended operating conditions.

Use a clinometer or a smartphone inclinometer app to measure the actual angle of the banks you intend to cut. If the measured angle approaches the machine's rated limit, plan the work for dry conditions and shorten the mowing pass rather than using the final few degrees as a test. Preparation can confirm that the machine is ready; it cannot increase the machine's engineered slope capability.

Document the measured angles alongside the machine's published rating in a simple log. This small habit is useful when a new operator takes over, when a contractor needs to document equipment selection, or when a property's slopes have changed because of erosion or regrading. The slope rating is an engineered operating boundary, and preparing the machine does not move that boundary upward.

6. The Pre-Season Checklist

7. Make the First Cut a Test Cut

After the checks are complete, start the machine on flat ground and run through its main functions: blade engagement, forward and reverse, left and right track response, and remote-control range. Then make the season's first slope cut on the gentlest bank rather than the steepest one. A short test cut confirms that the preparation matches the machine's actual behavior and gives the operator a chance to assess how the equipment responds after its winter rest.

From a manufacturer's perspective, this first test is worth keeping in the maintenance routine even when the machine appears to be in perfect condition. Storage can reveal issues that are not obvious during a visual inspection, particularly with batteries, remote-control systems, fuel systems, lubrication points, and track components.
